Scientists in GTA have released a stern warning in regards to the high chloride level in GTA waterways is damaging ecosystem, wildlife, ground water sources.

Road salt runoff is making some local waterways as salty as seawater. The salt is damaging the ecosystem, beginning to infiltrate ground water supply and has the potential to kill sensitive species, scientists warn.

According to CVC testing, during winter months, when road salting happens, chloride levels in streams consistently exceed 5,000 milligrams per litre. “It’s very, very high,” said Amanjot Singh, a senior engineer with CVC. “Some of the sensitive species will die.”
